Chris is helping out at the Marlin Coast veterinary hospital in Cairns. His first patient is a young dog which has had a nasty encounter with a hedge cutter.

Misty has ended up with deep cuts across her nose. How the young dog avoided more disastrous injuries is a miracle.
Chris' next patient is a turtle which was found by the side of the road after being hit by a car. It's ended up with a massive crack across its shell, and Chris is concerned it could have internal injuries. After a trip to the local haberdashery store, he comes up with a novel way to repair the shell.

A distressed cormorant has been brought in to SASH with a fish hook stuck in its chest. The bird urgently needs to be x-rayed to find out if the hook is causing any internal damage. But the emergency team is concerned about how the injured bird will handle anaesthetic.
SASH specialist surgeon Dr Steve Fernside is volunteering with a mobile community clinic called Pets in the Park. The charity helps support homeless people and their pets. The first patient of the day is Sam with his buddy Ty which has an infected foot.

  • Wildlife rescue groups here in Eastern North Carolina have used bra clips to mend turtle shells, usually with Eastern Box Turtles that have been hit by cars as they cross the road. In fact, they sent out a call for donations of old, worn bras just for the clips. They use super glue to attach the clips and piano wire to pull the clips together.

  • What's with Dona's neck though? It's growing all over the place. It's like it decided to grow to the right, the be a snake and curl around again.

    Marco MeijerMarco Meijer4 oy oldin
    • Long neck turtles are a species of snake neck turtles, which are "side neck turtles" meaning they're unable to retract their head as people are used to seeing. So the way she's tucking her head under the edge of her shell is just how they protect that part of their body. I imagine in uncertain situations (being handled by humans) they would keep their head near that tucked position in case protection is needed quickly.

      Kaylee LaderouteKaylee Laderoute3 oy oldin
    • I guess it might be a reflex for the turtle to keep the vulnerable neck parts and the head under the protruding part of the shell?

  • I can't help but wonder if the turtle's clips may rust when exposed to water :0

    SheghostlySheghostly4 oy oldin
    • it shouldn't - because those clips are meant to go on clothes and they would be quite useless if they rust after going in the wash. But I think they are only temporarily though, as they will snag on stuff on the ground and she needs a smooth shell, so hopefully it will heal up and the clips and wire will be removed :)

Bra clips for female turtle Donna would have been too normal - glad the craft store lady gave Chris an option that was even better Steve donating homeless dog time was great to see as well. I've gotten a better glimpse of the new vets and I think they are doing great! I'm in Florida in the United States - I'm sure we're probably behind in episodes but I always look forward to new ones. Thanks!
